Subject Description

This subject aims to develop basic and advanced patternmaking techniques through manipulation of fabrics on the three dimensional form. In particular it enables learners to explore more advanced techniques, leading to greater freedom of expression in the creation of patterns for design.


While the primary focus is on producing accurate patterns for both ready-to-wear and bespoke design, other fashion applications such as fabric properties, manipulation and technologies are explored to support concurrent and future projects in the school of fashion design.

 

Content

  • Taping the dress stand

  • Producing basic blocks for women’s wear

  • Draping techniques such as adding flare, yoke lines and panel lines

  • Manipulation of darts on the dress stand

  • Asymmetrical styling

  • Volume draping

  • May include backless, halter and strapless styling.

 

Learning outcomes or Competencies

On successful completion of this unit, learners should be able to:


  1. Demonstrate accurate taping of the dress stand in preparation for draping exercises.

  2. Calculate fabric quantity for draped designs

  3. Perform draping techniques to achieve basic blocks for women’s wear.

  4. Transfer the fabric drape to paper to produce accurate blocks to industry standards.

  5. Perform draping techniques to achieve a range of garment designs, including asymmetrical styling

  6. Interpret information from a variety of sources, including texts and websites, to achieve draped garments.

  7. Identify and interpret the principles of bias cutting methodology and develop practical handling skills

  8. Perform tasks in accordance with industry Workplace Health and Safety requirements.

  9. Create portfolio of work and document measurements and instructions.
