Subject Description

The aim of this subject is to provide the student an understanding of visual merchandising strategies as a marketing tool and a visual extension of a brand. It also provides the student knowledge in visual merchandising principles and elements in order to create and manage visual merchandising concepts as part of a professional brief.

Introduction to Visual Merchandising; What is VM? Factors that affect merchandising; Identifying target markets; Basic elements of merchandising.

Balance and Proportion; Balance and proportion as a merchandising strategy;Factors impacting on product performance

Formal Qualities of Merchandising; Retail strategies and consumer behavior; Accuracy of product placement for the marketplace;Importance of filled and unfilled space

Elements and Principals; Placement of elements and principals; Formal qualities of movement

Types of movement

Colour; The psychology of colour; The effects of colour on the bottom line; How to use colour as part of your VM strategy

Budget Merchandising; Identifying stock to create the most impact; Managing visual merchandising on a budget; Maximising sales; Pricing trends and changes

Technology in Merchandising; Using technology in visual merchandising; Planograms; Trends.
