Subject Description

Fashion Journalism provides the foundation for students to comprehend how to effectively report on fashion.


The course covers research, writing and layout (content and context). It includes the basics of writing (long-form and short-copy) and the application of these skills to various areas of the fashion/media industry… news publications, magazines, broadcasting and websites, as well as with PR, stylists and photographers.

Fundamentals - TO CREATE A GREAT STORY (CONTENT)

  • The interview process

  • Research - reporting the facts

  • Captions and headlines

  • Writing structure – “storytelling” journalism

  • Sub editing

  • Grammar

  • Writing style and tone

  • Responding to a brief


Writing - STYLE & ACCURACY UNDER PRESSURE

  • Examples of press releases and interviews

  • Writing “news” pieces quickly and accurately

  • Structure and style for specific media brands


Feature Stories – CONTEXT, REFLECTING A MEDIA BRAND

  • Long-form pieces for media brands.

  • Interviewing for short and long form.

  • Structure and style for profiles and feature stories

  • Formatting copy for sub-editing and print


Reviewing fashion shows/events/venues -INDIVIDUALITY

  • Sourcing information and exclusive content

  • Securing and implementing multi-platform coverage

  • Contextualising and researching

  • Interviewing for a review


Working in media(magazines and online) – ACCURACY

  • Writing headlines, captions and breakout boxes

  • Formatting copy and imagery for art directors and sub editors

  • Fact-checking copy

  • Sourcing relevant imagery
