Subject Description

The aim of this subject is to introduce students to fundamentals of typography. In this subject students will gain a greater understanding of graphic design, typography and composition.  

 

Content

Students will develop an awareness of typography as a medium of visual communication and an integral component of graphic design. Within this subject students will study the history and development of typography and typographic principles. They will produce work with a focus on typographic design solutions and design techniques using both digital and nondigital tools.

 

Learning outcomes

1. Understand fundamental graphic design principles such as layout, typography colour, line and composition

2. Resolve graphic design problems using critical and conceptual processes

3. Understand and employ visual research methods

4. Begin developing and experimenting with a personal visual language and style across a range of graphic media and techniques

5. Develop and apply experimental drawing techniques

6. Gain a fundamental understanding and execution of professional portfolio presentation skills.
