Subject Description

The aim of this subject is to demonstrate how visual communication techniques can be used in the design of

collateral for 2D and 3D applications.

Content

This subject requires students to translate their current 2D graphic design knowledge and practice to 3D objects

and spaces e.g. packaging and point of sale collateral. Students will be required to expand their design thinking

and skills in order to approach 3D graphic design briefs. Students will also be introduced to the technical aspects and language of packaging and point of sale material. Students will be encouraged to take innovative and lateral approaches to producing visual solutions, designs that operate across three-dimensions, and will be required to question the importance of generating designs such as packaging and signage with regard to ecological and social issues.

Learning Outcomes

1. Apply graphic solutions to product and spatial design outcomes

2. Assess the importance and/or necessity of graphic elements in product or spatial design solutions

3. Address how graphic designs might be accessed by users with impaired or low vision

4. Develop new and innovative approaches to graphic and image making through working in three dimensions

5. Investigate and implement design methods, processes and knowledge from other design fashion, interior and product design and apply these skills to their own design style and approach
