Subject Description

This is an elective subject that introduces the role and responsibilities of a photographer working within the complex field often referred to as:  photojournalism, social documentary, press photography and street photography.

The subject presents the role of photographer as storyteller- as the creator of images to illustrate a narrative in support of news material most often appearing in the print media, as well as personal photographic projects. The subject investigates notions of narrative - how images combine with text to inform and give insight; objectivity (the attempt to create images that are authentic, fair, and an accurate representations of actual events) versus subjectivity (documenting one’s personal experience and regard of society).

Students research the diverse work of famous practitioners of documentary photography considering their contributions to their field and the importance of their work in illuminating their life and times. An overview is presented of the history of documentary photography and its relationship with the changing technologies from the printed engravings of 1880s that captured images of the Crimean War to the proliferation of newspaper and magazine publications of the mid twentieth century and to their present decline and the rising importance of digital technology in the transmission of news and images. Ethics and legal issues will also be considered.
