Fashion graduate wins internship with Akira Isogawa

Raffles College of Design and Commerce fashion graduate Jong Min (Gabriel) Lee has taken out top honours at the spectacular Graduate Fashion Collections show at Carriageworks held on Tuesday 8 December, 2009 with his extraordinary “mille-fleurs” dresses.

Arts student ‘Shoots’ Chef

Third year Raffles College photography student Chloe Ferres was a finalist in the 2009 Sydney Morning Herald Shoot the Chef competition student category. Her photo is among five others on display at Star City throughout October, as part of the Sydney International Food Festival.

Photography major Chloe Ferres has won a magazine competition and her winning photo, of internationally acclaimed band Coldplay at Acer Arena, Homebush, was published in Music Australia Guide, the monthly publication of music retailer JB Hi-Fi.


Jiro’s one bright SPARK

Jiro Takayasu has been shortlisted for the SPARK 09 national mentoring program. SPARK 09 is the Australia Council for the Arts’ national mentoring program for young artists.


An illuminating loan from Sun Studios Australia

Students at Raffles College of Design and Commerce (RCDC) were recently approved for a $50,000 loan of lighting equipment courtesy of Sun Studios Australia as part of the company’s education program.


Raffles' Ruth McDermott shines at Smart Light Festival

Raffles College of Design and Commerce’s Head of Design, Ruth McDermott, added another string to her bow with her involvement in two major Sydney events.

Ms McDermott displayed her work in Smart Light Sydney, a unique new public festival, and part of the Vivid Festival, which transformed the city into a living canvas of music and light. She also exhibited at UTS at the same time.

An industrial designer with 20 years’ experience in Australia and Europe, Ruth collaborated on a large-scale installation, Cloud of Bats, that was unveiled on May 26 at Observatory Park (Watson Road), as part of the Light Walk section of the Smart Light Festival.


Raffles students enter World Photography Awards

A black and white shot of Sydney Harbour Bridge and a close-up of an Australian Sea Lion saw Raffles College represented at the 2009 Sony World Photography Awards in France.

First-year Bachelor of Arts (Visual Communication) student Jasmine-Lee Downie and recent graduate Michaela Skovranova each had a photo accepted into the prestigious Student Focus competition.


My Animal Planet - Student Photography Exhibition

My Animal planet - A photographic essay based on DADA concepts depicting the effects of the human way of life on our native species. The exhibition demonstrated that human impact is as far reaching as the underwater world of Australian sea lions to the heights of our key stone species-Grey-headed flying foxes and aimed to speak to the individual by suggesting simple solutions to counter our increasing impact on the native wildlife.


AGDA Award for RCDC design brochure

The designers of the Raffles College yellow design brochure, were recognised by AGDA in the 2008 National Awards. Naughtyfish Design, who were commissioned in 2007 to develop the RCDC brand, were awarded a Distinction in the Publications division of the awards. See AGDA website for more info.  


Spotlight on another fashion winner

Bradley Butler, when in his second year of the Bachelor of Design majoring in Fashion Design, took out the national prize in the Spotlight Formal Wear Competition.

 

New Articulation pathway for TAFE graduates

If you're a TAFE (NSW) Diploma or Advanced Diploma graduate in a specified creative design area, you are eligible to fast track one of our design degrees. Raffles College has signed a new articulation agreement with TAFE NSW to facilitate progression from TAFE NSW courses into degrees offered by RCDC.   


Industry Prize for Fashion Design Student

Jessica Gyoungwha Jeong, Fashion Design graduate at Raffles North Sydney campus, won an “industry prize” at the International Fibre Centre National Student Design Awards 2008 which were held on 21 October 2008 in Melbourne.

The prizes were awarded after a glittering gala parade in front of a 250-strong audience of industry professionals, academics from RMIT, family and friends.

While Jessica did not take out the Grand Prize, she won a gift bag valued at over $400 including a selection of cosmetics from Maybelline, a full-year subscription from Australasian Textiles and Fashion Magazine and other prizes.

Jessica’s award-winning designs was paraded along with a bevy of other award-winning designs by other Raffles’ Fashion Design students at the annual graduate fashion show held at “CarriageWorks” on Tuesday 9 December, 2008.


Photography students win ILFORD Prizes

Two photography students from Raffles took out 3 prizes in the ILFORD Photo Awards in 2008. James Barnett took out 2 third year prizes and Alessandro Viscontini took out the second year prize.


Rain fails to dampen Open Day 2008

Raffles College staged its a successful Open Day on Saturday September 6, 2008 with a record attendance of 450 people, among them around 180 prospective students.


Georgette’s denim designs a winner

Raffles College fashion design student Georgette Moussa was named a State finalist in the fashion category at the national 'Do It With Denim' Jeans for Genes Design Awards in 2008.

 

Yummy Hot Custard served up by Raffles

Hot Custard was the 2008 theme for the Annual Graduation Exhibition. The Raffles College graduation extended beyond an official ceremony with a 2-day event that celebrated graduation and showcased graduate student work. Our graduates' families were also provided with a “connected” quality experience. The College is proud to further support our graduates' achievements through an annual exhibition helping to promote work to industry, provide networking opportunities and help with employment opportunities.

 

Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery 

On July 15th, 2008 at the Atelier in central London, the judging of the Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery took place. After a long day of deliberation and tough decision making, the judges selected 26 entrants for the second stage of the competition. Solomon Harris-Light, who had graduated in July from the Bachelor of Design majoring in Fashion Design major, was flagged for this second stage of the prestigious prize from the UK.

In the September, it was announced that Soloman was awarded 3rd prize. Solomon’s award-winning embroidered garment was put on display along with the other winners in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He also won return flights to London for the award ceremonies, accommodation and 500 pounds spending money.


The Sky's the Limit

Photography student James Barnett whenin his final year (and now graduated), had a showing at Cafe 5 in Mona Vale - a show called "Urban Sky". The show was from 26th July to 25 August 2008.  His work was on display at Red Bubble. See the article about this in the Manly Daily.

If you haven’t heard of Oat Montien, you are likely to hear more. The productive BA (Visual Communications)graduate, majored in Graphic Design here at Raffles College, and is becoming a regular feature of Sydney’s design scene.

 

Fashion student exhibits at Powerhouse Museum

Visitors were able to get a glimpse of the next generation of Australian fashion designers at the Powerhouse Museum’s annual 2008 Student Fashion exhibition. One of our students, Allison Berger, work was exhibited in the collection.

RCDC hosts "First Five Out" Industry Networking

Raffles College of Design and Commerce was proud to host an Australian Graphic Design Association networking opportunity on Monday, May 5, 2008. The 'First Five Out' discussion panel featured recent graduates and industry professionals sharing their experiences of the first five years out of college.


Photography graduate snaps major award

Raffles College photography graduate, Ingrid Sjodhal of Surry Hills, was the winner of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (NSW) 2008 Student Folio of the Year Award when in her final year of the course.

Design Management - Elise Watson's great affinity with art drew her to studying at Raffles College."What I like about studying here is the quality of teaching and level of support.
