Home STUDYING AT RAFFLES Our academic staff Professor Patrick Bernard
Professor Patrick Bernard

Academic Director
Program Director, Culture and Communication

Patrick has had vast experience in the visual arts and in design education; as an academic manager, a lecturer, an administrator and as an exhibiting artist in Australia, the United States, Russia, Chad and India.

As well as his impressive formal qualifications, his enthusiasm and interpersonal skills have made him immensely popular with both students and staff. Patrick speaks four languages and, due to his rich life history, he is particularly well equipped to operate most successfully in our increasingly globalised and multicultural world.

He has designed, written, coordinated and lectured not only new subjects but also ‘pioneered’ entire new programs in different universities and college in Australia, the United States and India. He has exhibited his works (paintings, drawings & photographs) and has been invited to deliver guest lectures in universities and conferences around the world. As if that was not enough, he also managed a ‘One-Man-School’ with a nomadic tribe in Northern Chad (Africa) for two years and owned a restaurant in Australia.

Throughout his career Patrick has consistently endeavoured to foster supportive educational environments which encourage learning and promote the development of skills and self-actualisation. Patrick is an easily accessible and passionate educator who is always eager to share generously his encyclopaedic knowledge and expertise.

Patrick has also been conferred as an Associate Professor by Raffles University in Singapore.

Patrick always promotes a climate of mutual respect, enthusiasm and tolerance in a stimulating and supportive environment. He encourages critical reflection, self-evaluation, self-confidence and enthusiastic life-long commitment to learning in dynamic, open-minded and scholarly environments.

In his spare time he plays Spanish guitar and juggles with chainsaws.

Petty Hartanto - MDes Graphic Design from  Indonesia says: "I have really enjoyed my time in Raffles. The high-caliber lecturers and the diverse classmate background involved in the creative process has helped and enriched me with the confidence to grow as a designer. Studying at Raffles was a remarkable experience. The courses were insightful and thoroughly challenging. All the knowledge that I have obtained through the Master’s/Bachelor’s program has provided me with a solid foundation and comprehensive understanding of graphic design and their application in the real world."
